The Raptors 905 ten game winning streak game to an end on Saturday afternoon following an overtime loss to the Sioux Falls Skyforce at the G League Showcase in Mississauga. The 905 struggled to contain Derrick Jone Jr. (30 points on 7-14 shooting and 14-15 from the line) and Derrick Walton Jr. (25 points on 10-16 shooting and 10 assists).
First Quarter
With Lorenzo Brown, who was playing under a minutes restriction, on the court for less than 19 minutes the 905 struggled on offensive at times as the game progressed. This wasn’t the case in the first quarter during which the 905 were rolling. They scored 34 points behind the impressive play of Brown (4 points and 6 assists in 6:27 minutes) and had 11 assists as a team against zero turnovers.
Second Quarter
The strong play continued over to the second quarter and the 905 continued to lead by double digits and were up 54-42 with 3:34 to play in the half. That was where things started turn as the 905 only scored two buckets the rest of the quarter and the Skyforce closed the gap to two points, 58-56.
Third Quarter
Bruno Caboclo, who finished with 18 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals, had a nice put back to start the scoring in third quarter for the 905. Neither team could create much separation for the rest of the quarter until Davion Berry hit a buzzer beater three from just over half court to give the 905 a 83-77 lead heading into the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
The 905 led by 6 with less than 3 minutes to go and were still up 1 with less then a minute to play but could not keep the led with Brown on the bench for the entire score. With the score tied at 103 it was time for overtime and 2 minutes of free basketball.
Overtime
The Skyforce won the jump ball and hit a three which was answered by a two point shoot from Kaza Keane (12 points and 10 assists). The Skyforce pushed the lead back to three and the 905 did not score again until a meaningless two point shot as time expired following a couple of botched plays trying to set up a three point shot.
Post Game Quote
Nevertheless, for those fans searching for a silver lining Coach Stackhouse summed it up best - “It’s good for me, now I get to tighten the screws back on them a little bit”.
