On a rainy Sunday afternoon in Mississauga, the Raptors 905 defeated the Wisconsin Herd 106-95 behind a balanced scoring attack. Bruno Caboclo had a strong fourth quarter and paced the 905 with 25 points. Kennedy Meeks (14), Malcom Miller (14), Fuquan Edwin (13), Shevon Thompson (10) and Lorezeno Brown (10 points, 9 assists) were also in double digits.
The play of the game (if not the year so far) for the 905 was Brown's dunk in the first quarter following a hesitation move just past half court. The 905 bench went nuts and I have to admit that it brought me out my seat ever so briefly in press row.
Following the Spurs in the 6 "3on3" format for NBA G-League game recaps this season, here's my take on what happened both "on the court" and "off the court" (with a bonus video of Brown's dunk).
On the court
Wheels up: It was so nice, I have to mention it twice. Brown's dunk in the first quarter showed me a new side to his game.
12 minutes: In what seems to becoming standard practice (at least for the 905 games I watch), Stackhouse played Brown for the entire first quarter. Brown slowed down a little bit as the game went along and one has to wonder if the heavy minutes early on were catching up with him.
Training day: In the fourth quarter, it was interesting to watch the referees review a shot on the court side monitor to determine if it was a two or three pointer. The PA system was blaring, the Saga City Dancers were on the court and it was still anyone's ball game. The G League isn't just about developing the players, the referees are also working on their game and also looking to go to the next level.
Off the court
Better late than never: At the G League Showcase earlier this month I missed picking up a sweet Showcase snapback that was on sale. I thought my window was closed. Much to my delight some hats were left behind and available for sale at the Raptors 905 Team Shop at the Hersey Centre. I now have a new hat in my collection!
For the fans: On most weekend games the Raptors 905 have a post game shoot-a-hoop and autograph session for kids 13 and under. This such a great experience for young basketball fans. My boys were at the game today with their uncle and they loved it!
Family: Lucas Nogueira was courtside a the Hersey Centre to support the 905 today. Note only that, he stayed until the end of the game. OG Anunoby was also in the building but kept a noticeably lower profile. It was has been a reoccurring trend it is great to see the Toronto Raptors - from DeMar DeRozan to Fred VanVleet - showing up to support the 905. This is fantastic!
He still probably didn't have the typical Lorenzo Brown game that we have been seeing from him but you are not going to play great ever night and that is why you got teammates.
